Kunstquartier Bethanien, Berlin

group show

The curated group exhibition human_nature brings together works by ten photographers and media artists from Germany and Poland. Their practices explore the complexity of human nature and its ambivalent relationship with the environment in diverse, poetic, and critical ways.

In light of current ecological challenges, reflecting on this relationship is becoming increasingly urgent, as it raises questions of responsibility, vulnerability, and new forms of coexistence. Thematically, the exhibition focuses on interpersonal relationships, the entanglement of humans and nature, the construction of images of nature, memories of places, and the fragility of human existence.

The installation by Helen Gräser showed parts of her work Shake, for which she has developed her very own form of image montage in which three different photographic series are intertwined. B&W photographs from her private surroundings (fermata) and colour shots of the Auensee and the Deutz funfair are linked together in a leporello in such an associative way that the photographs open up enigmatic perspectives on the relationship of people to their living space beyond the internal reality depicted. Only the elimination of the logical context in the separate series and a paradox in the pictorial dialogues that stimulates the viewer‘s imagination enables emotional access beyond preconceived patterns of meaning.
