This series is part of an ongoing occupation with the abandoned quarries in the Siebengebirge, a small ridge in the Rhineland area close to Bonn, that I started in 2019.
Once there were over 40 quarries in the Siebengebirge. The oldest ones are of roman origin and date back to the 1st century A.D.
Stones - mainly Trachybasalte, Trachyte and Basalt - were stoped here over the course of almost 2000 years, until the quarries were closed in the early 20th century. Reclaimed by nature today, the abandoned quarries are fascinating places with a strong atmosphere and a multitude of different perceptions. Places, that elude from hasty attributions and interpretations, that irritate and fascinate and awaken curiosity and the urge of comprehension.
Even today, 100 years after their closure, they tell a story of intrusion and transformation, of contradictions and ambiguities, destruction and healing. They are the result of the ongoing processes of construction and development of the both material and immaterial systems of mankind - manifestations of the anthropocene.
Diese Serie ist Teil einer 2019 begonnenen Auseinandersetzung mit den ehemaligen Steinbrüchen im Siebengebirge bei Bonn.
Im Siebengebirge gab es einst über 40 Steinbrüche. Die ältesten von ihnen sind römischen Ursprungs und gehen auf das 1. Jh. n. Chr. zurück. Fast 2000 Jahre lang wurden hier Steine – überwiegend Latit, Trachyt und Basalt - abgebaut, bis die Brüche im 20. Jahrhundert schließlich verlassen wurden. Nach ihrer Stilllegung sich selbst überlassen und von der Natur zurückerobert sind die ehemaligen Steinbrüche heute faszinierende Orte mit einer starken Atmosphäre und einer Vielzahl an Deutungsmöglichkeiten. Es sind Orte, die sich jeglichen vorschnellen Zuschreibungen und Interpretationen entziehen, die irritieren und faszinieren, Neugierde und Entdeckungsdrang wecken.
Auch heute noch, 100 Jahre nach ihrer Stilllegung, erzählen sie von Eingriffen und Transformationen, von Widersprüchen und Mehrdeutigkeiten, Zerstörung und Heilung. Sie sind das Ergebnis der permanenten Deutungs- und Fortschreibungsprozesse durch die materiellen und immateriellen Systeme der Menschen - Manifestationen des Anthropozäns.
